Chapter Fifteen
BEFORE SHEâD EVEN reached her room, Rachel had decided to take a break for the night from anything involving vampires. She was feeling overwhelmed and trapped after so many days surrounded by them. The only humans sheâd seen since arriving in Porto were the guards sheâd encountered during her daytime prowls of the estate. Other than Master Pinto, that was, though she hadnât spoken to him either since her winery tour. The thought brought to mind Antônioâs plan for her to sit next to the master vintner during the dinner . . . which would also have placed her far too close to the vampire lord for Rachelâs safety.
She frowned at the idea of Ingeborgâs inevitable jealousy . . . or rage. Whatever her reaction would have been, it wouldnât have been good for Rachel. Though the ladyâs jealousy continued to puzzle her. Lady Inge was beautiful and damn powerful. Her seeming insecurity when it came to attracting a mate, or at least the one she wanted, was more than surprising. Rachel actually felt a bit embarrassed on her behalf. And she sure as hell didnât see herself as any kind of competition. She was a distraction at best, and more likely nothing but a new taste for dinner, she thought, laughing darkly.
She hurried the last few steps to her door, convinced that some vampire or other would pop around the corner, or through one of the other doors, and demand her assistance. She wasnât in the mood to assist anybody else that night. Nor was she in any way obligated to do so. Her only employer had given Rachel the night off, and she was going to damn well enjoy it.
When she finally reached the door to the only room she used anymoreâthe daylight roomâshe didnât rush inside. Her door had a flimsy lock built into the knob, which was the only one she could secure from the outside. Inside, there was a slide bolt, but that didnât provide any security when Rachel was out of the room. Sheâd been confused by the lack at first, but had then decided the vamps didnât care about the privacy of their human guests, and they were the only ones who used these rooms.
Sheâd been faced with similar personal security problems several times during the years sheâd been working for the Society. Hell, some of those situations had been engineered by the damn Society for their own purposes. It wasnât that they didnât value humans, they were just very selective as to which humans they cared about. And the list didnât include their pet killers. The Society barely acknowledged the humanity of Rachel and the other assassins. They were more like well-trained hounds. And hounds neither needed nor wanted privacy, because a hound had no secrets. But then, the number of Rachelâs true secrets could be counted on one hand. And none of them changed the fact that the Society owned her, body and soul. But only for now, no matter what they might think.
